The best beaches on Margarita Island are spread all around the island, and each one suits a different plan: Playa El Agua for a long, lively beach day, Parguito for surfing, Guacuco for families, El Yaque for windsurfing and kitesurfing, Playa Caribe for the afternoon, and Punta Arenas or Manzanillo for peace and quiet and fish fresh off the boat.

Margarita is small: you can drive across it in under an hour, so you can try a different beach every day. This guide covers what each beach offers, who it is best for and how long it takes to get there from Pampatar, where our beachfront apartment is.

Playa El Agua, the island's most famous beach

If you only visit one beach in Margarita, make it this one. It is about four kilometres of white sand lined with palm trees, with a row of beachfront restaurants and bars. You can rent a shade and loungers, eat fish and seafood without leaving the sand and try water sports.

El Agua faces the open sea and the waves can be strong. Check the flags and swim where there are other people and lifeguards. With small children, calmer beaches such as Guacuco are nearby.

  • Best for: a full day out, lunch by the sea and people who like a lively atmosphere.
  • Highlight: a walk along the shore in the late afternoon.
  • Good to know: it is the busiest beach in high season and at weekends.

Playa Parguito, the surfers' beach

Parguito sits right next to Playa El Agua, a few minutes away by car. It is Margarita's surf beach, with waves almost all year and a young, relaxed vibe. Even if you don't surf, it is worth going for the atmosphere and the beach food stalls, from empanadas to ice-cold coconuts.

  • Best for: surfers, groups of friends and anyone who wants something more casual than El Agua.
  • Good to know: with the waves, it is not ideal for children who can't swim well yet.

Playa Guacuco, the family beach

Guacuco is a wide, simple beach on the east coast, about 20 minutes from Pampatar and close to La Asunción, the state capital. It has plenty of room on the sand, restaurants with tables on the beach and a very family-friendly feel, especially on Sundays. It is a local favourite.

  • Best for: families with children and large groups who need space.
  • Pair it with: a visit to La Asunción and Santa Rosa Castle.

Playa Caribe, light sand near Juan Griego

On the north coast, close to Juan Griego, Playa Caribe is a wide beach with light sand and deep blue water. It usually has waves and a lively atmosphere, with beach clubs and music. Its big advantage is the location: after the beach you can drive up to Fortín La Galera in Juan Griego for one of the best sunsets on the island.

  • Best for: an afternoon at the beach that ends with sunset in Juan Griego.

Manzanillo, the fishermen's bay

At the northern tip of the island, Manzanillo is a fishing bay with colourful boats pulled up on the sand. The water is calmer than on the open northern beaches, and simple beachfront restaurants serve the catch of the day. Come early in the morning to watch the fishermen haul in their nets.

  • Best for: eating fish straight from the sea in an authentic setting.

El Yaque, the windsurf and kitesurf capital

El Yaque, in the south of the island next to the airport, is famous among windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world. It has steady wind and shallow water for a long way out, which makes it perfect for learning. Schools on the beach rent gear and give lessons for every level.

  • Best for: windsurfing, kitesurfing and learning in water where you can stand.
  • Good to know: with all that wind, it is not the most comfortable beach for lying down with a book.

Punta Arenas, on the Macanao Peninsula

Macanao is the western side of Margarita: drier, wilder and far less touristy. At its tip lies Punta Arenas, a beach of light sand with calmer water than the north coast and a fishing village with restaurants. The sand builds up on both sides of a point, so you can walk from one shore to the other.

  • Best for: a full day off the grid and a sunset facing west.
  • Good to know: it is far from Pampatar and has fewer services. Bring water, shade and cash.

La Restinga, the beach you reach by boat

In Laguna de La Restinga National Park, a boat takes you through mangrove tunnels to a very long beach of sand and shells, where you can swim and eat fried fish. It is more of an excursion than a beach day, and well worth it. We explain it step by step in our La Restinga boat tour guide.

You don't always need the car. The water in Pampatar bay is calm and there are several beaches a few minutes away:

  • Pampatar beach: in front of the old town and the castle, with a fishing-village feel.
  • Playa Varadero and Playa El Ángel: about 2 km away, with shades, loungers and food stalls. Much quieter on weekdays.
  • Playa Concorde (El Morro): between Porlamar and Pampatar, with calm water and good-value seafood restaurants.

Our apartment has beach access, with the Downtownbeach beach club right across the street. See what to do in Pampatar for more ideas in town.

Which beach to choose

  • Travelling with small children: Guacuco, the Pampatar beaches or La Restinga.
  • You want restaurants and atmosphere: Playa El Agua.
  • You want to surf: Parguito.
  • You want to windsurf or kitesurf: El Yaque.
  • You want peace and quiet: Punta Arenas, Manzanillo or the Pampatar beaches on weekdays.
  • You want the best sunset: Playa Caribe followed by Fortín La Galera in Juan Griego, or Punta Arenas.
  • You only have half a day: the Pampatar beaches or Guacuco.

Tips for a beach day in Margarita

  • Respect the flags. The open northern beaches, such as El Agua and Parguito, can have strong currents.
  • Avoid the midday sun, roughly from 11 am to 3 pm. The Caribbean sun burns even through clouds.
  • Carry cash in small bills. In practice, US dollars are widely used, and small notes make shades, food stalls and tips easier. More in our Margarita Island travel tips.
  • Ask the price before you sit down under a shade or order at a beach restaurant.
  • Drink plenty of water and bring sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent for the evening.
  • Go early in high season (December, Carnival, Easter week and August) to get a good spot.

The apartment has beach towels, chairs and an umbrella, so you don't need to pack them.
